Spring 2024 #3-Red Rock Canyon and Getting our Kicks on Route 66

View of Red Rock Canyon from Red Rock Overlook

One of our favorite places is Red Rock Canyon National Monument. This beautiful bit of wilderness is within 10 miles of Las Vegas. We'd much rather be at Red Rock Canyon!

Before checking into our campsite we took a quick look at the canyon from the overlook.

Watson is quite happy at Red Rock Canyon. As long as he's on a leash (attached to us), he is allowed on many of the trails. We did have to take it easy with him and hiking this trip so short trails and not the rugged ones.

Sunset at our Campsite. We had two nights here so we had a full day to explore.

The main event at Red Rock Canyon is a Scenic Drive. It is a 13 mile loop, reservations required Oct. to May except that you can enter without a reservation before 8 am and after 5 pm. Our tradition (second time now) is to enter before 8 and Dean makes breakfast at one of the stops along the way. This time we stopped at the Visitors Center. One of the perks of the van is that we can take it with us.

Breakfast with a glorious view and then off to explore.
Mom, are you coming with us?

Kings of the Hill!

Leaving Red Rock Canyon we headed to Route 66. We got our kicks and jerky along the way.

I found this stretch of Route 66 to be disappointing-not even many Route 66 signs but they did have some Burma Shave signs. Dean did not know about that tradition.

We're officially on an adventure-we got our first Root Beer Float!

I'm a sucker for taking photos of old phone booths-it's a requirement when we find one. This one was out of order and most of the time our cell phones were too.

We're headed to the Grand Canyon.

We still have a lot of traveling to do on this trip. Time to get back to it. We are now at the East side of Texas, the area called the Piney...
