May Trip #13 - Escalante NM, Bryce Canyon NP and Fremont Indian SP

Calf Creek Campground was part of Escalante National Monument (run by BLM) and we spent our travel day in and out of the Monument. AMAZING landscapes! We need to keep protecting it. (This is one of the places that there were attempts to take away lots of the land (along with Bear's Ears)

At the Escalante Staircase Visitor's Center.
Watson is sure there is a lizard here somewhere! He loves lizards. Guess I do too! Is kissing lizards related to kissing frogs? (though I already found my prince so I don't need to kiss any frogs)

The 3D Topographic maps at the Visitor's Centers sure helped me understand the landscape. Several places (Mesa Verde, Capitol Reef, Escalante) I just could not understand what I was seeing until I checked out the 3D. Mind-boggling.

Fremont Indian State Park (Utah): Convenient stop, really, really nice campground. Another one we will go back to on purpose. One of the local high schools were the Fremont Indians (changed to a more appropriate mascot a few years later) so it was a bit of an odd feeling to stay at Fremont Indian State Park. The docent (Piute) at the visitors center categorized "Fremont Indian" as an Archeological term. Very interesting and informative discussion with him.

Our traditional "Morning Coffee and Sun Worship" photos.

Looking toward the canyon from the campground. Looked like a nice hike out there.

There were petroglyphs on the rocks behind the Visitor's Center. Can you see them (fairly high up).  Closer view below.
